2007 Summer Teacher Experience in Packaging, Utilizing Physics (STEP-UP)
Georgia Tech Electrical & Computer Engineering and the Microsystems Packaging Research Center

Program Dates: June 4 - July 27, 2007
Application Deadline (extended):
March 16, 2007

The National Science Foundation funded Summer Teacher Experience in Packaging, Utilizing Physics (STEP-UP) program is an eight-week research experience for metro Atlanta high school physics teachers. The program provides training in modern physics concepts, their applications to engineering, and their relevance to today’s technologies. STEP-UP has four components: (1) a two week modern physics hands-on course, (2) a two day module course on microelectronics and electronic packaging, (3) a 5 ½ week summer research experience at the Packaging Research Center (PRC) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) labs, and (4) six half day classroom adaptation workshops. Participants are expected to fully attend all components of the program. A summer stipend of $5,700 as well as $1,000 of funds to acquire materials and supplies will be provided to each participating teacher.

This is a unique opportunity for up to 12 physics teachers from metro Atlanta to:

  • Refresh their modern physics knowledge
  • Learn applications of modern physics concepts to microelectronics that are relatable to high school students
  • Have the opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art research laboratory for 5 1/2 weeks during the summer
  • Prepare research-based curriculum materials for classroom implementation
  • Participate in two follow-up professional development workshops during the academic year.
